the traditional Semitic calendar comprised twelve lunar months of 28 or 29 days. To forestall Nissan the first to occur (after several years) in Summer, the Ancients, at more or less regular intervals, had to add a thirteenth month (oftentimes a second "Adar", sometimes a second "Tishri").
